Boy Scout Skyler Silvis, of Scottdale, contacted the Scottdale Historical Society to see what he could do to help our organization as he completes one of the final steps to obtain his Eagle status. After reviewing several of our needs and wish list items, Skyler decided to take on the task of repairing areas under the porch of the historic Loucks Homestead and to build a storage solution.
Skyler immediately began working on concept drawings of the storage space for under the expansive porch where the Historical Society can have secure storage for outdoor equipment and tools. In addition to the storage space, Skyler also wanted to give the area a fresh coat of paint and fix areas of the ceiling that was coming down under the porch.
In August, Skyler and his fellow Scouts from Troop 160 started to work on the project. “Removing the loose paint from the walls now shows off the arched masonry details that were once hidden under layers of paint. Patching the ceiling and a adding a fresh coat of paint has really transformed the space under the porch”, said Ian Yuhouse of the Scottdale Historical Society.
With a generous donation from Scottdale Lumber, Skyler, his father Charlie and fellow Scouts began working on the storage solution. On Saturday, September 26, Skyler finished construction of the 4x8 foot storage space at the historic Loucks homestead.
Yuhouse added, “Skyler’s commitment and dedication to the Scouts and his drive to help our organization is to be commended. We are excited to see Skyler receive his Eagle and can’t thank him, his father Charlie and the other Scout volunteers from Troop 160 enough.”
