The Eckman family and friends established the Paul E. Eckman Memorial Scholarship to recognize a graduating senior from Southmoreland or Geibel High Schools who demonstrate Paul’s values: service to the community, leadership, interest in local history, a strong work ethic and the ability to maximize educational opportunities. The Eckman Family is pleased to announce that Michael Conroy, of Scottdale, PA, is the recipient of the inaugural Paul E. Eckman Memorial Scholarship.
Mr. Conroy’s academic success includes participation in the gifted program (ALPHA), Advance Placement courses, National and French Honor Societies and more. Michael’s leadership is evident through his role as Vice President for both Student Council and Student Government. His school activities are not limited to marching and concert band, prom committee, student newspaper and the school play. Volunteer activities extend to the Kecksburg EMS and Firehall and the Jeanette EMS.
While Michael’s school record and volunteerism alone is deserving of recognition, his involvement with the Boy Scouts of America is exemplary and parallels the namesake of this scholarship. Michael is an Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow – Wagion Lodge Vice Chief, Camp Conestoga Staff, Uncle Ben Award recipient, North East Region Area 4 Venturing Vice President and the Westmoreland-Fayette Council Vice President.
Mr. Conroy is highly recommended by his nominators who describe him as a leader with an ability to work with others, honorable, informed, highly motivated, self-confident, reliable, articulate, analytical and determined.
Mr. Conroy plans to attend Washington and Jefferson University in the fall with a major in Social Science Education.
