2017 Paul E. Eckman Scholarship Recipient Charles Echard

The Scottdale Historical Society is pleased to announce the winner of the Paul E. Eckman Memorial Scholarship. The $1000.00 scholarship was awarded to Charles M. Echard on May 26, 2017 at Southmoreland High School Class Day.

The Eckman family and friends established the Paul E. Eckman Memorial Scholarship in 2015 to recognize a graduating senior from Southmoreland or Geibel High School who demonstrates Paul's values:  service to the community, leadership, interest in local history, a strong work ethic and the ability to maximize educational opportunities.

Charles has demonstrated academic excellence through the Alpha (gifted Program), AP courses, National and French Honor Societies, Mock Trial, Westinghouse Science Honors Institute.  His leadership is evident as he is the class president and student representative to the school board and serves on student council. Additionally, he holds office in several school clubs and has been a delegate to the Hugh O'Brian Leadership Academy.

While his school record alone is deserving of recognition, Charles was selected because of his demonstrated leadership and volunteerism with the Boy Scouts of America which parallels Paul Eckman, the namesake of this scholarship.  Both attained Eagle Scout from their Everson, PA troop, were officers in Wagion Lodge, Order of the Arrow, both attained Vigil rank and both served on staff at Camp Conestoga.  Just as Mr. Eckman went on to devote his adult life as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts in his adopted state of New Jersey and received its highest awards, Charles is well on his way.

Charles faced a challenge while an officer in the Northeast Region Area 4 Venturing Program. While others quit, Charles persisted and was able to put together a spring program for over 200 youth.

Mr. Echard is highly recommended, one nominator wrote: “Charles is a gifted student who combines an unwavering drive to succeed academically with a genuine concern for the community in which he lives.”  Charles is described as articulate, sincere, taking attention to details and deadlines, having strong convictions tempered by good judgment, and is well regarded by teachers and peers.

Charles will attend the Honors College at the University of Pittsburgh in the fall to study political science with a goal to make a positive impact on public policy through a non-profit or government agency.
