The Scottdale Historical Society, in conjunction with Robert Levin, president of Levin Furniture, is pleased to announce that Alyssa Wertz, graduating senior from Southmoreland High School, is the recipient of the 2014 Jane A. Yuhouse Memorial Scholarship. Ms. Alyssa Wertz received the $1,000 Scholarship at Southmoreland’s Class Day on Wednesday, May 28, 2014.
Ms. Wertz demonstrates strong family values, academic success and a passion for baking, qualities that make her an exceptional candidate to receive the Jane A. Yuhouse Memorial Scholarship. Like Jane, Ms. Wertz’s passion for baking and the culinary arts started by learning family recipes with her mother and grandmother. One of Alyssa’s favorite memories is spending time with her grandmother, mother and sister, making and decorating Christmas cookies to share with others.
Alyssa is involved in community events and programs, such as the Relay for Life, Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week, Skills USA and the PPG Gingerbread House Competition benefiting Children’s Hospital. She has received first place honors in 2013 and 2014 for the Family, Career and Community Leader of America for Baking and Pastry Arts district and state competitions respectively and the Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center’s local Cupcake Wars competition.
Ms. Wertz plans to attend Westmoreland County Community College in Youngwood, Pennsylvania to pursue a degree in the Culinary Arts with a focus on Baking and Pastry Arts.
The Jane A. Yuhouse Memorial Scholarship was established in 2014 by the Scottdale Historical Society thanks to the support of Levin Furniture and the Howard Levin Memorial Fund, to honor a loving wife, mother and friend who had a passion for baking, traveling and supporting non-profit organizations like the Scottdale Historical Society.
Donations can be made into the Jane A. Yuhouse Memorial Scholarship at Scottdale Bank and Trust, located in Scottdale, Pennsylvania.
